AbstractThe relevance of this study is due to the current need for an objective assessment of the resource potential of foster families. This potential is a key criterion for selecting candidates and predicting the quality of family care. However, the connection between the coping behavior of foster mothers and their psychological resilience — a key buffer against family stress — remains insufficiently studied. The aim of the work was to identify intergroup differences in coping strategies and resilience, and to determine the nature of their relationship among women with different parental status. The hypothesis suggested specific profiles of coping behavior and differentiated links between stress management strategies and the level of resilience, depending on the group membership of the respondents. The study involved 321 women of different ages and with different parental experience: 109 foster mothers, 102 biological mothers, and 110 women who have not given birth but have a positive attitude towards future motherhood. Methods of variational statistics and correlation analysis were used for data processing. The results showed that in stressful situations, foster mothers more often use planning and positive reappraisal strategies. In contrast, biological mothers show a tendency towards confrontational coping, while women planning motherhood combine active strategies with behavioral avoidance. Although foster mothers demonstrate the highest resilience scores on all measured scales, correlation analysis reveals significantly weaker links between their coping tactics and resilience as compared to the control groups. This phenomenon indicates a mismatch of internal resources and suggests a reduced adaptive potential in conditions of prolonged family crises. The findings support the need for a differentiated approach in social work practice. The empirical data justify the development of targeted psychological support programs. These programs should focus on integrating coping competencies and strengthening resilience in foster mothers to ensure a stable and developing environment for children in foster care.
