AbstractThe intensification of educational cooperation between Russia and African nations highlights the urgency of investigating the psychological mechanisms of mutual trust within real-world interactions between these two cultural communities. Intercultural trust, examined through the lens of implicit theories, allows for the explication of foundational, automatic cognitive filters that operate during intercultural communication. The objective of this study is to examine the content and structure of subjective implicit theories of trust in intercultural interactions among representatives of Russian and African cultural groups. The study was conducted at RUDN University. The sample (n = 200) comprised 100 Russian and 100 African respondents-students aged 19 to 43. Diagnostic data collection was carried out using the author’s proprietary method of a private semantic differential, titled “Trust in Intercultural Interaction.” Mathematical and statistical data processing was performed by calculating the mean scores for the specified constructs, identifying the shift amplitude in construct ratings, and conducting a factor analysis (principal component analysis). The semantic analysis of the resulting factor structure involved the evaluation of the most significant constructs. The article reveals the structural and content characteristics of the implicit theories of mutual trust held by Russians and Africans. Empirically, a five-factor structure of the implicit theory of trust toward Africans among Russian respondents was identified, while a three-factor structure among African respondents interacting with Russians was found. For representatives of the Russian community, who constitute the cultural majority, the implicit theory of trust toward Africans is differentiated; its content reflects aesthetic qualities and a “premium” of optimism on one hand, and a desire for predictability and controllability of contact on the other. For Africans, as representatives of the cultural minority, their implicit theory of trust toward Russians is monolithic and pragmatic; its content centers around the necessity of cognitive effort and time investment to achieve successful intercultural contact, and it is associated with tension, difficulties, and low dynamism. The results of the study on the implicit models of trust among representatives of the Russian and African communities allow for a deeper understanding of the commonalities and differences in the mental spaces of the host cultural majority and the adapting minority. Furthermore, they help mitigate the manifestation of barriers embedded in the everyday consciousness of representatives of different cultures during real, day-to-day contact.
