AbstractThe article examines the relationship between subjective time scales and individual neuropsychological characteristics. The study was conducted to test the hypothesis that there is a correlation between the participants’ ability to predict intervals on the time scale and their psychological characteristics. The study consisted of two parts: psychological testing (Eysenck’s EPI questionnaire, the Spielberger-Hanin Anxiety Scale or the Reactive and Trait Anxiety Scale, and a method for determining the dominant perceptual modality) and an experimental assessment of time perception through the generation of visual stimuli followed by the recording of results. Specialized software was developed to collect and record such data. Subsequent analysis was carried out using non-parametric statistical methods, including the Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman (Friedman ANOVA by ranks) and Wilcoxon tests for paired samples. Cluster analysis was used to identify individual and group characteristics of the indicators under investigation. The results show that a person’s psychological traits exert a significant influence on their ability to perceive and predict time intervals. Cluster analysis details the patterns of time interval estimation, based on the division of the sample according to psychological indicators and revealed characteristic patterns of estimation and prediction of time intervals for each of the clusters. Participants with high levels of neuroticism, constant or temporary anxiety tend to underestimate the predicted subjective time intervals in most types of sequences; whereas participants with low anxiety and neuroticism more often overestimated the predicted time intervals. The study also shows that using different temporal dependencies in different types of experiments influences the magnitude of the relative error in predicting the next value in a time series and determines the participants’ overall tendency to underestimate or overestimate time intervals. The findings of this study may serve as a basis for further research into predicting the performance of operators of ergatic systems and the development of machine learning algorithms; new methods of planning, training and time management based on the characteristics of time perception, as well as the development of clinical methods for the diagnosis and correction of time perception disorders in various neurological conditions.
