AbstractThe authors of this article examine the multifaceted problem of stress resilience, both from the perspective of the mechanisms by which stress impacts the body and psyche, and from the perspective of adaptive responses to its factors. Prolonged exposure to stress, without adequate resolution, leads to the depletion of the body’s adaptive reserves. Sports, especially international contests, require a unique combination of extreme physical exertion and intense mental mobilization, and developing an athlete’s resilience is crucial during a competitive event. The aim of this study was to examine the level and qualitative indicators of resilience in powerlifters during a contest period. The hypothesis is that there must be a statistical relationship between individual characteristics of athletes’ stress resilience and their competitive performance. The research methods included quantitative, mathematical-statistical data analysis (Spearman’s rs-rank correlation coefficient), and qualitative analysis. The main diagnostic instruments were the PSM-25 scale; the Stress Resilience Self-Assessment Questionnaire; the CSAI-2 Competitive Anxiety Inventory; a method for assessing the type of emotional response to environmental stimuli; and a method for assessing personality motivation for success. The theoretical significance of this study lies in its contribution to general psychological knowledge regarding the development of resilience to stressful competitive conditions. The practical significance of this study lies in the fact that the recommendations developed can be used in psychological preparation of athletes to improve their performance, competitiveness, and the achievement of high athletic results. The study reveals a consistent relationship between parameters associated with stress resilience. Using Spearman’s rank correlation, it was found that stress levels were statistically significantly (positively) associated with cognitive and somatic anxiety, as well as with the refractoriness-type emotional response. Anxiety levels were inversely associated with self-confidence and motivation for success. Self-confidence was positively correlated with motivation for success and the euphoric type of emotional response. The research prospects suggest further formative work with a group of athletes who require further improvement of their adaptability to stress factors and development of stress resistance in competitive activities.
